Where to Stay in Bicol : Mayon Lodging House

Reviewing all the DIY Itineraries that I saw online for backpacking Bicol there were a lot of accommodation to choose from, considering the price, people reviews, and its amenities.

First I considered Mayon Backpackers Hostel in Legazpi, because this was the place every backpackers and "budgetarian" travellers go to. It has really good reviews online but unfortunately there are no available slots for the dates of our travel.

I've also considered checking in to Oriental Legazpi to experience its infinity pool, swimming with the beautiful view of Mayon Volcano as your background. Sadly, the price is not within our budget for a 2 night stay. I have read (though I cannot confirm, that you can have a day tour here just to swim for an amount of entrance fee.)

I've tried to book some of the accommodation online but I didn't received response from them. That was then I remembered looking in AirBnb. That is where I saw Mayon Lodging House hosted by Ate Nelia who's very responsive to our needs (even we are not asking she voluntarily sms us with cool things to do in Legazpi and that is really cool for me).

Front view of the Lodge House, landmark is Petron and as you can see, Mayon Volcano at the background.

This hostel is newly built, when I saw it in AirBnb it only has two good reviews but I still consider to stay here because of three things: it's cheap (997 per night plus AirBnb fees), great location (accessible to any transportation to and from scenic spots in Albay), and lastly, it has a very (as in great) view of majestic Mayon Volcano at their rooftop. Most of the people who have gone in Albay knew that most of the time Mayon Volcano is shyingly hidden in a bunch of clouds so you won't always see its perfect cone but here you can check it out anytime. Perfect time to capture its beauty is early morning, and here at Mayon Lodging House, I have captured it perfectly while having our brekky at the rooftop (chilling at its finest)

Taken 6am in the morning, that majestic perfect cone of Mayon Volcano

You won't always see Ate Nelia around the lodging house but you can approach their accommodating staff, Ate Aning and the Uncle which I missed asking the name. They can tell you how to get around Legazpi especially when you are on a DIY Itinerary, this pretty much help us getting around to places.

I would also recommend this hostel because it is in perfectly situated location. It has an eatery at the ground floor or you can use the kitchen at the rooftop (but we didnt try this when we were there). Accessible to transportation because it is very near the highway where jeepneys and tricycle are passing along. It is also a 10-minute walk or 10 peso tricycle ride to Cagsawa Ruins, 10 mins tricycle to Sumlang lake, and much nearer (than coming from Legazpi) going to Quitinday Hills, Busay Falls, Hoyop Hoyopan Cave, and Daraga Church. Personally, I really recommend staying in Daraga than in Legazpi for faster routes and Mayon Lodging House is a perfect place to go to.

Because it is newly built, as of date, there is no wifi and television yet in every rooms (but who cares, as a backpacker you will only need a place to sleep on comfortably and within budget right?). Also, there are some improvements on the way as we saw some construction materials at the rooftop (I just don't know whats that for). Nevertheless, I would greatly recommend staying here and would definitely rent here again when going back to Bicol.
